Death Cab For Cutie’s Kintsugi: Songs About Repairing Things That Are Broken

Kintsugi. It's a Japanese word and it is the title of the new Death Cab For Cutie album. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing something so well, like a vase, using gold that it becomes more valuable than before it was broken. It's metaphorical meaning sheds a lot of light on what has been going on in the life of the band and particularly that of lead singer and songwriter Ben Gibbard. Consider that Gibbard got divorced from actress Zoey Deschanel in 2012 and that original band member and producer Chris Walla left the band at the completion of Kintsugi and you see how perfect a title it is to deal with things breaking. We will talk with Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer about the music and hear tracks recorded live at The Village studios in Santa Monica for KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.
