Brittney Spencer‘s Free At Noon performance started off with a high-energy Ramones-style drumstick countoff into a high-energy honkey tonk, into a gentle melodic verse that revved up over time.

The message, clearly, “Don’t box me in,” something that Spencer said is the underlying theme of “Damn Right, You’re Wrong,” which she said is about “people telling me what I could be, should be, and shouldn’t be.” She wrote it to re-introduce herself and remind herself of this.

Full of excursions into Americana and pop, with chill pop moments into soaring harmonies and hooks, Spencer’s Free at Noon performance cast a wide net and showcased her range, with many shoutouts along the way: her love for Reba McEntire, her love of radio, and her love of World Cafe Nashville correspondent Jessie Scott, who gave her an internship at NPR and then a job out of college.

Listen to the performance in full below; Spencer is on tour through the winter, and plays the Borgata in Atlantic City on February 18th..
