Philly’s Ther shared a new single called “bookstore” this week, an unlikely jaunty tune about everyday dread and worry. The bouncing bassline and sweetly simple observations keep the song from ever getting too heavy; “And I thought about elephants, pretty much the whole time,” sings songwriter Heather Jones.
Ther’s music, which has leaned folksy in the past, is now more of an indie pop conglomerate with that distinctive Philly grit and unease. Think Adult Mom with a dash of Modern Baseball. In this subculture, there’s perfection in tiny imperfections, and Ther understands this concept well.
You can catch Ther playing a solo set this Friday with The Lunar Year and Greg Electric for Doll Spirit Vessel’s album release show at a house venue in West Philly. Message Ther or the other bands on Instagram for the venue if you plan on coming.
