After 20 years out of the spotlight, Joni Mitchell made her triumphant return to live music at last year’s Newport Folk Festival, where she surprised the crowd — and the world — by joining friend and close collaborator Brandi Carlile on stage. That performance, which features classics such as “A Case of You” and “Big Yellow Taxi,” will be released as AT NEWPORT, a digital record and exclusive vinyl on July 28th, with the first single “Both Sides Now,” available now.
Carlile and her band including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe, Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, among others feature prominently on the album. For the record’s liner notes, Cameron Crowe gives context to Mitchell’s absence, and shares her story of recovery from a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 2015. Part of that story includes the “Joni Jams,” or intimate musical gatherings she would host in her living room at the time. Now that Mitchell’s back on the scene, she’ll headline Joni Jam at a new home: The Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Washington. This sold out performance, featuring James Taylor, Graham Nash, Annie Lennox, Cyndi Lauper, and of course Brandi Carlile, is on June 10th, 2023.
