A host of DJs, visual artists, writers, singers, and songwriters converged on World Cafe Live on Sunday, June 11th for the culminating showcase of Black Music City 2023.

A collaboration between WXPN, WRTI, and REC Philly, the Black Music City program awards grants to Black creatives from Philadelphia creating new work exploring or inspired by the city’s rich legacy of Black music. Now in its third year, the program gave $125,000 in grants to 30 local creators.

At World Cafe Live on Sunday, guests mingled in the venue’s Lounge for a couple hours for a project gallery before making their way downstairs to the Music Hall where WXPN General Manager Roger LaMay made opening remarks and awards were presented to this year’s grantees. In addition, the day featured live performances from four Black Music City grantees; Dianne “Badd Kitti” Thompson, the DWP Academy, Julia Pratt & Melvin Darrell, and Zeek Burse.
