Sam and Louise Sullivan, Rubber Band Gun cover The Strokes for benefit album
22TWENTY Records’ first installment of their cover album series that honors landmark records drops Dec. 4, and two of our local favorites are on it. Listen to the Sullivans’ cover here.
Just when you thought we were done raving about breakout folk-pop siblings Sam and Louise Sullivan and their collaborator and producer Kevin Basko, we’re back with more news.
Boutique label 22TWENTY Records is launching Familiar Strangers, a series of compilation albums in which various artists contribute covers to put spins on entire landmark albums. The first drops Dec. 4 and will feature covers of every song on The Strokes’ debut album Is This It.
“Incredible artists from all over the world will cover a song from the album, recording their vision of a song that helped change their musical lives,” the label said in announcing Familiar Strangers Vol. 1 – The Strokes ‘Is This It’ on social media.
Among artists contributing to the compilation are the Sullivan siblings and Basko’s solo project Rubber Band Gun.
22TWENTY teased the compilation by releasing the Sullivans’ cover of the album’s penultimate song, “Trying Your Luck.” Listen to it below.
Basko under the Rubber Band Gun name took a turn at the album’s third track, “Soma.” Unfortunately, that cover has not been released.
You can hear these covers and more from artists such as Jermango Dreaming, Baseball Greg, Kaycie Satterfield, and The Motor Show when the record drops Dec. 4.
A portion of proceeds from Familiar Strangers will benefit Sounds Of Saving, a youth mental health nonprofit rooted in music culture that helps young people use music intentionally through artist films, a high-school program, and resources at shows.
