Philadelphia’s music scene contains multitudes. From stellar hip hop by artists such as Reef The Lost Cauze to the chamber folk stylings coming from Tiny Kick Records, our music scene has plenty of genres in play.
Philly’s honky tonk country rock outfits Roberta Faceplant hot off a killer performance at Philly Music Fest dropped a new single, “Old School Outlaw,” Friday as they gear up for the release of their first album in spring 2027.
Check out the new song’s Joey DiTullio-directed video—which was filmed at Second Hand Ranch and The Set Philly—below.
”[The song] kind of feels like a bit of a mission statement for what the sound is coming forward from the band,” vocalist Katie Feeney said.
Bassist Nick Anastasi wrote the song, and it all came together when they riffed on a specific lyric: “I was raised on second hand smoke and powdered iced tea.”
“It kind of all evolved from there on his end,” Feeney said. “We are definitely trying to go for this ’70s outlaw vibe that everybody in the band’s really into.”
The rest of the band—drummer Aaron Boczkowski and guitarists Drew Parker and Mykk Hoffman—got in on it and they all played even more into the ’70s country and southern rock outlaw vibe.
Inspired by outlaw icons like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, Roberta Faceplant is “leaning away from what people think of it when they hear mainstream country music.”
“It’s campy, it’s super fun, it’s just definitely no filter, no hesitation, at odds with the law,” Feeney said.
The track was recorded at Cambridge Sound Studios with Todd Mecaughey and mixed and mastered by Ron DiSilvestro at Studio 4.
“Old School Outlaw” is the band’s first single from their upcoming debut album, which is expected out sometime in spring 2027. But you won’t have to wait that long for more new music from Roberta Faceplant, as the band is planning to drop three more singles in the run up to its release.
Feeney called putting the record together “a labor of love.”
“I’m really excited to, next year, have this full album to share with you guys,” she said.
The band’s been playing new material for some time, including at The Fallser Club during Philly Music Fest, when they shared a bill with Owen Stewart, Sug Daniels, and Nik Greeley and the Operators. They’ve got two upcoming Philly shows scheduled: Oct. 30 at Second Hand Ranch (yes, the band will be costumed but Feeney is keeping those details under wraps), and Nov. 21 at Johnny Brenda’s with John Faye and Sug Daniels.
“I think the Philly music scene is so special,” Feeney said. “When we’re having shows or when we’re out at other people’s shows, you’re just surrounded by other people who are making music at the top of their game. You know what I mean? Sometimes it makes me kind of emotional.
“ I just love this community because I feel like in other cities maybe people are disjointed or they’re competing against each other,” she said. “But here it really does feel like everybody’s got each other’s back and nobody’s slacking so you gotta raise your game constantly.”
