Lady Alma explores hope, poverty, and joy in her Philly Anthems songs

Philly soul and gospel icon Lady Alma is known for her upbeat and playful songs. But for WXPN’s Philly Anthems project, she steps beyond that energy to explore poverty, crime, and hopelessness.
Lady Alma’s song “Liberty” came together with the help of producers Marley Marl and 88 Fingerz.
They were compelled to tackle a more serious subject, setting the track apart from the energy and gospel tones Lady Alma is known for. In the song, the vocalist addresses the aforementioned themes, diving deep into vivid storytelling throughout her verses.
However, the lush, soulful background vocals draw listeners in and elevate the message, which also carries a sense of hope and joy. Listeners are encouraged to approach it with an open mind and heart—embracing the message, finding light in the darkness, and celebrating unity, love, and the belief that one day we will truly have liberty and justice for all.
On the track, 88 Fingerz brings his signature, tailored stylings, living up to his name by exploring every note and nuance. Inspired by the rhythmic drums and meticulous grooves crafted by Marley Marl, he creates a smooth, flowing soundscape that gives the songwriter room to truly shine.
“Liberty” is the third song from Philly Anthems. Eric Bazilian of The Hooters released the first Philly Anthem song, titled “Better Times,” and Eliza Hardy Jones’ song “America The Beautiful” was the second song released in the project. Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride and R&B and rock singer-songwriter Devon Gilfillian are also contributing songs in the coming weeks.
In October, WXPN will premiere songs by Grace Gardner, Sug Daniels, Black Buttafly, The Bul Bey, JR Everhart, and Moustapha Noumbisi, along with the grand prize-winning song from this year’s Song Challenge, “Workman’s Song #1” by The Flying Vees.
The project will conclude on Record Store Day in April 2027 with a Philly Anthems album featuring all the songs, marking WXPN’s annual vinyl release.
