A few months back, we had the chance to see MT Jones play a few songs here at WXPN, where we make World Cafe.

It only took a second of hearing his voice to transfix the audience. Of course, the voice is the first thing you notice about Jones, who hails from Liverpool but sounds like he’s straight out of Motown. There’s some Marvin Gaye in there, but Jones is also reminiscent of another U.K. soul singer: James Hunter.

After attending school at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, he was a songwriter for other artists before taking the leap with his debut album, Joy.

Today, we’ve got a mini-concert on tap with the multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, recorded at Liverpool’s Whitewood Recording Studio.
