It’s always interesting to see how an artist grows throughout its career. It’s like following a great television series; every season, you’re watching to see what’s different, hoping your favorite program doesn’t fall off, or worse, get cancelled. Fans of Ground Up haven’t had to worry about that too much. The hip hop group from Philadelphia has done a great job in the past three years with keeping their fans engaged and also generating a buzz that catches new listeners. What’s interesting about MCs Azar and Malakai is their knack for adjusting their sound to fit the state of hip hop in its present form, yet at the same time remaining who they are.

This strategy might remind you of the one Kanye West and Jay-Z use, and it keeps them relevant to both new generations of hip-hop listeners, as well as their longtime fans.

Over the past three years, Ground Up has dropped nine mixtapes with dope lyrics and head-nodding beats by producer Bij Lincs; in June, their first official single “Let’s Ride” debuted on iTunes, and the band recently dropped its new “Wrath of God” track. Check out the music video below, and catch Ground Up at Union Transfer on November 14. Tickets and information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
