With an impressive new album on the way and a stellar set at Newport Folk Fest under their belt, Philadelphia’s Slaughter Beach, Dog has been named our Artist To Watch for August of 2023.

Formed by guitarist and vocalist Jake Ewald, Slaughter Beach, Dog originally served as a source of inspiration and a way to break writer’s block when performing and writing with Modern Baseball, but was never fully realized until the emo band went on hiatus in late 2017. His side project suddenly transformed into his main focus, and Ewald set about recruiting his friend and former bassist Ian Farmer, as well as Zack Robbins, Adam Meisterhans, and Logan Roth to round out the band’s lineup.

Slaughter Beach, Dog quickly gained more widespread attention with the release of their 2017 sophomore album Birdie. Since then, the indie rockers have produced a run of albums showcasing Ewald’s literary, character-driven songwriting: Safe And Also No Fear (2019), and At The Moonbase (2020). They played a Free at Noon concert and a Key Studio Session in 2017, recorded an Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session in 2019, were featured that year in an extensive profile story on our website, and were part of the virtual Free at Noon roster during the pandemic.

With their fifth album Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling on the way this September, and the band’s biggest hometown show to date on the horizon at The Fillmore Philly this November, we can’t wait to see what else the band has in store for us.
