David Bowie, circa Let’s Dance | via RollingStone.com

This Labor Day weekend, we here at WXPN decided to stretch out and dig in to a deep assortment of what we’re terming, in the BBQ spirit, #XPNLongHots — songs that are six minutes or LONG-er. We’ve been at it for the past two days, and it’s been a total blast…with more than a few surprises.

When the special got announced, I heard and saw handful of people joking about how it was just going to be jams from The Grateful Dead, Phish and the epic Springsteen cuts from The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle and Born to Run. Which, yeah, we’re playing that stuff — of course we are. But the music we love spans much more territory than that, as any committed XPN-er will tell you.

Here are twenty #XPNLongHots that you might not have been expecting – heck, some of them, we weren’t even expecting – ranging from the full seven and a half minutes of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” complete with Stevie Ray Vaughn’s guitar solo, to Laurie Anderson’s experimental and alluring “O Superman.” Check them out below and tune in for more Long Hots all Labor Day. The special continues until 10 p.m.
