NJ’s Annie Blackman communes with the spirit world in “Why We Met” video
NJ-based singer-songwriter Annie Blackman is celebrating her new home on revered indie label Father/Daughter Records with a new single and music video.
“Why We Met” is an instrumentally simple, stripped-back track, but lyrically delves into heavy topics, describing in detailed imagery the song’s subject having a fixation on a drink, and seemingly analyzing how to feel about this person, “I don’t know how to love you, no / Turn to face me, lift the bottle / Tilt it back.” For the music video, Blackman worked with her brother for a narrative-based short film.
“William and I have been making all sorts of shorts together since high school. We had some time on our hands, homebound over the holidays, so we thought it’d be cool to do something a little more involved,” explains Annie in a press release.
Her brother also spoke about the choice in the storytelling component of the video, one that is centered around spirits and features the playing of an Ouija board:
“We wanted to make a video that treated ‘Why We Met’ like the score to a short film, rather than just a visual catering to a song. The ghost story we tell rides that line. While classic music video elements like singing to camera made their way into the project, thinking narrative first pushed us to try things we otherwise might have avoided,” he said.
