With a North American tour behind her and live dates planned through the summer and fall, Mitski is nothing if not busy this year. Her latest album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We came out last September, and with it did music videos for “Bug Like an Angel,” and “My Love Mine All Mine.” Both videos were choreography-driven, with abstract and whimsical elements that Mitski has been known for, and that pop up in her live shows (such as her stack of chairs in “My Love Mine All Mine”).
“Star,” takes a different approach, with the black-and-white video presenting Mitski floating through a pond on a small boat. Serene, otherworldly, and ethereal are words that come to mind to describe the video, which was filmed over a summer night in 2023.
Maegan Houang, who was worked with Mitski on past videos “Happy,” “The Only Heartbreaker,” and “Stay Soft,” shared the vision for “Star,” in a press release, saying “Unlike the more narrative/concept driven videos Mitski and I have done together in the past, I wanted this video to encapsulate the impressionistic circularity we all experience. Our lives oscillate between light and dark repeating itself in an endless cycle where nothing is permanent. The best moments are fleeting, but so are the bad.”
The music video manages to capture all that and more. With haunting visuals that match Mitski’s vocals, it has a fleeting quality that demands you rewind it as soon as it’s over. Watch it below.
