Joining us for this Indie Rock Hit Parade live session is an artist who’s making a fresh start after an enviable career in the world of avant-garde jazz. Sharing stages and recording studios with the likes of Iggy Pop, John Zorn, Wendy Eisenberg, and Steve Gunn, Tennessee-rooted Zoh Amba established themselves as a fiercely adventurous saxophonist-for-hire. But it’s the album they released earlier this year that might be their boldest move yet.
Eyes Full isn’t Zoh’s debut as a solo artist, but it’s their first since pivoting to a guitar-led, singer-songwriter style. Of course, given their background in experimental sound, the record is frequently freewheeling and abrasive, with Amba’s expressive voice accompanied by overdriven power chords.
Recorded before a series of dates opening for Courtney Barnett, Amba visited our studios along with guitarist Kevin Hyland and drummer Noah Scott Boling to rip through a quartet of Eyes Full highlights. Also in the set is a new song, one of a few they’ve been testing on the road.
