The Eyes Have It: The Residents return to the Indie Rock Hit Parade

As a longtime fan of the group, I wish I could offer you an interview with The Residents on the Indie Rock Hit Parade.

However, as fans of the legendary art-rock collective already know, the members do not reveal their identities and do not grant interviews. That’s the way it’s been since they first opened up their weird world to the public over 50 years ago. Despite this arms-length relationship with their followers, The Residents have surrounded themselves with collaborators, mediators, and other folks who are just close enough to speak with authority on their past, present, and future. Chief among those trusted voices is spokesman Homer Flynn.

In this conversation, Flynn shines light on how The Residents were inspired to make their 1979 album Eskimo, which the group is bringing to the stage in its entirety for the very first time. Aside from being one of the most celebrated releases in their lengthy discography, Eskimo also marks the first appearance of The Residents’ now-signature costumes: the four members donning tuxedoes, top hats, and face-obscuring masks resembling oversized bloodshot eyeballs. Flynn, who has served as the collective’s primary visual artist, shares the origins (and his original, scrapped idea) for the iconic look.

The Residents’ Eskimo Live! Tour comes to Arden Gild Hall on Thursday, October 15th. Learn more HERE.
