Tonight’s Concert Pick: The Thermals at First Unitarian Church
What does Carrie Brownstein have against “I Don’t Believe You,” the first single off The Thermals‘ latest album, Personal Life? Sure—in addition to taking up residence in her backyard shed—the band apparently broke into her home and installed a bunch of mini-speakers that constantly blare the song from a variety of hidden locations (including a bunny statuette, a ceiling fan, and…uh, her toilet). But, if some band is going to creepily sneak into your house in the dead of night, don’t you want it to be an adorable pop-punk trio like The Thermals? And if you’re going to wake up to the inescapable sounds of that band’s music, don’t you want it to be a catchy, “oh-oh-oh”-laden single like “I Don’t Believe You”? In fact, given Brownstein and The Thermals’ shared Portland, OR, origins (and their Kill Rock Stars/Sub Pop labelmate status), we’re going to go ahead and assume they’re all best buds. That way, we can enjoy the video without worrying about any weird invasion-of-privacy undertones that may or may not be present. The Thermals perform with Cymbals Eat Guitars and Post Post at 8 p.m. at First Unitarian Church; tickets to the all-ages show are $14.
