R5 Productions announces the cancellation of Screeching Weasel’s April 7th show at The Trocadero
You’ve almost certainly seen—and been disgusted/appalled/outraged by—the video by now. On March 18th, during a SXSW show at the Scoot Inn in Austin, Screeching Weasel frontman Ben Weasel sexually harassed then physically assaulted a woman in the audience. When the club owner immediately came on stage to restrain Weasel, he assaulted her as well. The Internet responded: some condemned Weasel’s actions, while others (sadly, but not surprisingly) ignored it, condoned it, and/or applauded it. On Sunday, March 20th, he issued an apology via his website. Yesterday, the other four remembers of Screeching Weasel resigned from the band as a result of Weasel’s “shameful and embarrassing” acts of violence.
The whole situation brings up a variety of serious questions and issues. The least important of those questions is probably, “How will the rest of the band’s resignation affect Screeching Weasel’s upcoming tour dates—including the Philadelphia show?” But, if anyone was looking for an answer to that particular question, now they have it.
The cancellation has been confirmed by The Trocadero via email. [UPDATE 10:37 a.m.: The cancellation is now up on The Troc’s website in addition to the R5 website.]
