Dry Feet at Bookspace

Earlier today, Philebrity broke the news that DIY venue Bookspace would be shutting down at least part of its operations, possibly due to complications with L&I:

Bookspace, the charmingly gritty DIY venue we told you about back in May, seems to have been knocked out of the events game (for the time being at least), presumably by L&I. We first started hearing this as we were closing up shop on Friday, and attendant event cancellations seem to confirm that. So was it NIMBY justice, or just good ol’ not-having-your-shit-on-the-up-and-up?” (To read the original post, go here.)

Not too long after, The A.V. Club Philly weighed in, saying that Bookspace will remain open as a bookstore but will “temporarily” stop hosting music events. The A.V. Club speculates that the shut-down was triggered by a recent complaint from a neighbor:

“We’d guess the sudden attention from the authorities has less to do with the recent Philly Weekly feature on the venue and more to do with a response to an Aug. 21 neighbor complaint about what seems like a tangentially related incident on the fishtown.us message board.” (You can get the rest of those details here.)

More on this situation as it develops.
