Billy Joel’s legendary 1972 WMMR concert from Sigma Sound Studios to be released on CD Nov. 8th
On April 15, 1972, WMMR broadcasted a live performance by a somewhat-unknown Billy Joel from Sigma Sound Studios. Hosted by then-WMMR DJ Ed Sciaky (RIP), Joel’s version of “Captain Jack” from the broadcast began to get a lot of radio play on WMMR; soon word spread about Joel, whose career was boosted by the radio play here in town. For many listeners back then, it was the first time we had really been exposed to Joel’s music. To commemorate Joel’s 40-year solo career, Columbia Records is releasing a special 2-CD edition of Piano Man with the bonus disc including the WMMR concert broadcast. It is the first time the broadcast will be officially released; however, bootlegs of the show have been circulating for years. The CD is being released on Tuesday, November 8th. Many fans will recall Joel’s addition to the lyrics: “So you got your tape deck and your Chevrolet, oh, but there ain’t no place to go anyway – ‘cept Phila-delph-EYE-A” Check out the track list below and listen to the now legendary version of “Captain Jack.”
