Listen to David Dye on WMMR from 1972
This past month David Dye has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of World Cafe which winds up this weekend with a series of live concerts from World Cafe Live. David, as many of you may know, got his start on commercial radio on WMMR in the Seventies when he was a student at Swarthmore. I discovered David on the radio in the early 70’s and followed him to WIOQ in the early 1980’s. We both started as volunteers at XPN (David was on Sleepy Hollow; I was one of the hosts of XPN’s “Beat Planet,” the evening “alternative rock show”). As a fan of radio and specifically as big a fan as I was of WMMR growing up in Philly, when I recently stumbled across some old WMMR air checks I fell in to a pot of radio history gold. The WMMR air checks included some of Philly’s earliest legendary FM radio DJ’s like Ed Sciaky (R.I.P), Michael Tearson, Luke O’Reilly and Dye.
Listen here to an air check of David from March 6th, 1972.
David’s voice has aged but his tone, inflection and style remains the same. Below, is the set list of songs that David played. You can listen to more WMMR airchecks here.
