Impressionist to play Milkboy Philly with Left of Logic this Friday, July 6th
Local band Impressionist takes many forms and many sounds. Starting as the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Kyle Press, the band soon blossomed to include upwards of half a dozen friends and fellow musicians. Press may perform solo in a living room, or with a stage-swelling local band supergroup opening for Sun Ra Arkestra or Akron/Family. The band is an experiment, to say the least, fanning out in an impressive scope of musical stylings. Press alternates between low-key hip-hop style vocals and self-taught throat singing, fingering synthy keyboard lines while the band swims through psychadelia, noise pop, and sax-laden improvisation.
Their sound defies easy comparison but could be best likened to Akron/Family’s more psych-wave tone from Love Is Simple. Impressionist has released two EPs — The Quest for the Golden Synthesizer Pts. 1 & 2 — and plans a future release of parts 3 and 4. The EPs are available for download (name your own price) on their bandcamp.
Impressionist will open for West Chester prog rock group Left of Logic on Friday, July 6th at Milkboy Philly. The show is 21+; tickets are available for $10 here. Stream and download Impressionist’s “You Are Not Alone,” from their debut EP, below.
