Arrested Development playing World Cafe Live at The Queen in Wilmington in September

The hip-hop group Arrested Development released their acclaimed, ground breaking debut album, 3 Years, 5 Months, And 3 Days In The Life Of… in March, 1992. That same year, Dr. Dre released his game-changing debut album, The Chronic. Its production and musical style were of notable and significant impact on rap and hip-hop, plus the fact that it helped launch the career of one Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (who back then was known as Snoop Doggy Dogg). It was an album about weed, women and gettin’ down and dirty, loosely falling in to the “gangsta rap” category by those who generalize the category too broadly. In contrast, Arrested Development’s 3 Years was equally ground breaking for its samples, its positive “life music” message, and its mainstream pop sensibilities. Both albums had several number one songs, both bands won Grammy Awards (Arrested Development won as Best New Artist) and both were equally important but for different reasons. While the post debut life has been more commercially more successful and viable for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Arrested Development’s legacy remains a handful of solid releases, yet none as singular as their debut. Now, twenty years after its release, Arrested Development embark on a 20th anniversary tour and is releasing a new album, Standing At The Crossroads on August 6th.
