Get to know Sunset Recorder: playing at the Fire tonight and Johnny Brenda’s tomorrow
Lo-fi surf rockers Sunset Recorder are made up of vocalist/guitarist Renee Rowlett, bassist Ryan Idell, and drummer / vocalist Robert Beamer. Robert and Ryan originally met when they were fifteen after discovering their similar tastes in music; soon they began playing music together and never stopped. After seeing Renee perform solo at an open mic night in the summer of 2011, they began practicing only a week later.
Since then they have played at many DIY spaces, house shows, and venues in Philly such as North Star Bar as well as the Sun Drop Music Festival, and other shows at The Fire. What initially caught my eye about the infectious sounding troupe was their acoustic performance during Loves Local Music Day. It was a sunny day in May and the Rocket Cat Cafe was hosting a live musical performance in the backyard. Ever since, I have been listening to their EP, full of indie rock vibes, swift beats, and dreamy hooks. They even have a song named after the infamous Tiger Beats on Monday nights at The Barbary. Renee’s voice produces a monotone yet comforting feel to the song while joining with Robert’s in sweet harmonies; it’s less poppy than Best Coast but more upbeat than Beach House. Sunset Recorder will be performing in Philadelphia twice this weekend; tonight at The Fire at 9 PM, along with Zach & The Outside Eyes who also performed at Loves Local day. The show is $8 and 21+, tickets are available here. They also play Johnny Brenda’s tomorrow evening with AU, again 21+ at 8:30 p.m for $10, tickets are available here. You can listen to their album Tuning into the Universe below.
