Stream and download a live set from Jeffrey Lewis via NYCTaper (playing West Kensington Ministry on 8/14)
Anti-folk singer-songwriter Jeffrey Lewis will play a few shows in August with Jaimee Garbacik, hitting the West Kensington Ministry in Philadelphia on August 14th. The pair are promoting Gender & Sexuality for Beginners, a book written by Garbacik with art by Lewis. The short tour combines two aspects of Lewis’ prolific and varied artistic career – in addition to having released over two dozen records, the Lower East Side native is an active visual artist, having developed his own comic book series called Fluff while writing several essays and critiques on comic book and song writing.
Lewis’ music is highly literate and socially conscious, with the lyrics often namedropping places and people (like in “Cult Boyfriend” below) or considering topics like consumerism in “Kongru Green Slime.” Most recently, Lewis released Hey Hey It’s… The Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel Band in May following 2011’s A Turn in the Dream Songs. Tickets and information for Wednesday, August 14th’s show with Roof Doctor can be found on the Facebook event page. In February, Lewis played a Don Giovanni Records showcase at the Music Hall of Williamsburg with lablemates Waxahatchee; NYCTaper recorded the set and has made it available for free download here.
