Video Premiere: “Timecoat” by Aunt Dracula
Experimental pop musician Aunt Dracula went full-on psychedelic for his new “Timecoat” video. The song comes from Face Peel, an LP that Philadelphian Scott Daly had planned to release back in 2009 before taking a brief detour from his musical projects. Now back in music mode, Daly has released Face Peel on the Aunt Dracula Bandcamp page and has two more albums, a remix set and new full-length, in the queue.
It would be easy to pigeonhole the 9-minute long “Timecoat” as just another weird and warpy Animal Collective / Panda Bear-influenced band that popped up following the release of the latter’s Person Pitch in 2007. But there’s a dormant, doomy punk side to the song’s afro / freak-pop outer layers that doesn’t rear its head until about midway through, broadening the sonic palette of the track and showing that this is not just another dime-a-dozen bedroom project.
Aunt Dracula’s next full-length is being produced by Philly heavyweight Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recording (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Mary Lattimore) and is expected to come out later this year. For now, slip into an alternate universe with the video for “Timecoat,” produced by Logan Owlbeemoth and Phantom Photon.
