Kurt Vile covers Nine Inch Nails’ “Down In It” for AV Club (playing City Hall Courtyard tomorrow)
Kurt Vile put on his industrial hat when he visited the A.V. Club offices recently, covering Nine Inch Nails‘ “Down In It” for the publication’s Undercover sessions. The concept (A.V. Club chooses a list of songs at the beginning of the year that get crossed off as bands cover them) has yielded many out-of-left-field pairings, some more successful than others. The Philly musician picked the song because “it’s Nine Inch Nails and it’s the weirdest thing we could do and I could get Rob to get all nerded out on pedals and drum machines….” His re-imagination of the 1989 track is a long departure from the expansive, technicolored tracks on this year’s Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze (and rightly so) but there is still an unmistakable Vile-ness in the delivery of the rap verses.
The video’s timing is perfect – Kurt Vile will perform a free show in the City Hall courtyard tomorrow, August 28th, which has been declared as Kurt Vile Day by Mayor Nutter. Catch the real Trent Reznor with his band at Made in America this weekend. More information for both events can be found here. Watch Vile covering “Down In It” below, followed by the video for the original version.
