Recap: Chromatics and Glass Candy light up Making Time

The September edition of DJ Dave P’s Making Time party brought dreamy electropop outfit Chromatics to the Voyeur nightclub in Philly, along with their Portland neighbors Glass Candy. The former’s set got off to rousing start with the bright pulse of “Lady” from their 2012 double LP Kill For Love. The performance was focused and fierce, despite the intrusion of one enthused fan who got onstage and all up in singer Ruth Radelet’s business (she was removed by security and the show went on). Their set drew mostly from Love – the title track sounded magnificent – but dipped back to 2007’s Night Drive for the band’s cover of “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush. Glass Candy took the stage not long after midnight, and was a formidable wake-up blast for the crowd; the long running collaboration of producer Johnny Jewel (who pulled double duty with Chromatics as well) and singer Ida No felt like something between a friendlier Crystal Castles and a more aggressive Robyn. No’s vocals rushed from bright shouts to abrasive screeches, and the set plowed through one rapid-fire track after the next. While Glass Candy didn’t connect on a songwriting level as strongly as Chromatics – the cuts all kind of ran together – their energy was infectious, as was their evident bond with the crowd. No made it a point to clasp every outstretched hand within arms reach throughout the set, and even returning after the last song faded down for a few final hi-fives.
