Slint and Spires That In the Sunset Rise get cerebral at Union Transfer

This week, The Key ran a piece about the almost-cultish influence of Slint’s Spiderland. The band, in honor of the album’s recent massive re-issue, stopped at Union Transfer Thursday night (along with Illinois-based avant-garde duo Spires That In The Sunset Rise) for a night of intense sonic introspection and surrender. No atmosphere can equate that of a cult favorite’s reunion tour, but Slint’s pioneering instrumental atmospherics and post-modern lyrical anguish draw in a very specific kind of music fan; teenage and 40-something rock aficionados commiserated over their favorite solitary-listening album with equal fervor. When the band jumped into Spiderland‘s opener, “Breadcrumb Trail”, concergoers’ screams echoed with a tinge of catharsis. And after STITSR’s experimental, woodwind- and delay-heavy opening set, the room was prepped for a deeply meditative experience. Check out photos from the show below.
