Bliss out to Alex G’s DSU EP, now streaming at The Fader
Philly bedroom pop musician Alexander Giannascoli, aka Alex G, is releasing his debut full-length DSU next Tuesday the 17th of June via Orchid Tapes. Somewhat reminiscent of the early home recordings of Modest Mouse and Kurt Vile, with some Built to Spill jangle pop in for good measure, the album is streaming in full today via the good folks over at The Fader, which had previously refereed to him as “the internet’s secret best songwriter” – take a listen to the album here.
We’ve been digging Alex G (the person / the band) for a little while here on The Key, and part of the appeal is definitely the hermetic nature of his music. You can totally picture Giannascoli as a creative introvert holed up in some West Philly apartment or Fishtown warehouse, layering guitar drones and drum loops, harnessing the right feedback tones, crafting songs that expunge his ennui to tape. But the music also works at another level, since its drifting melodies and gentle tempos are calming and quite beautiful, making the resulting songs and sounds we hear less about him and more about a shared experience – something not isolated and strange but shared and oddly comforting.
