XPNFest Recap: Nicole Atkins gets dramatic on the Marina Stage
XPN sweetheart Nicole Atkins treated fans to a knockout performance on a sweltering Marina Stage. Still riding high after the release of her recent Slow Phaser LP, the Atkins we saw today, clad in a floor-length white dress and colorful necklace, was the visual antithesis to the Atkins we saw at Non-COMM back in May. Her set, though, was as strong as ever and by the end of set closer “The Tower,” she had the crowd in the palm of her hand.
Pulling heavily from Slow Phaser, Atkins made sure to also hit the song that endeared her to so many XPN fans back in 2007 – Neptune City‘s “The Way It Is” is a phenomenal introduction to the New Jersey native’s theatrical music style. And though her sound has somewhat reinvented itself between that debut and Slow Phaser, Atkins remains on top of the scene vocally. “Girl You Look Amazing,” inspired people to get up and move around a bit, while “The Way It Is” garnered cheers and hoots after some impressive vocal runs during the chorus. She and the band rocked out hard to the end of “The Worst Hangover,” verging on hair metal proportions. Check out the photos and setlist below, and listen to the audio here (via the WXPN media player).
