Portland, Maine indie rock group The Box Tiger released their debut full length album debut Set Fire last year, a follow-up to 2012’s self titled EP. The trio formed in 2009 near Toronto with Sonai Sturino, Jordan Stowell and Lauren Chan. Recently the group played at Boston Calling. They also did a great raw recording of “Knives” for Jersey’s Lakehouse on Tape in July.

The music is a great combination of other indie bands like Joy Formidable and Sleigh Bells. However, what makes the album unique are the stunning vocals of Sturino. During the span of Set Fire, her voice is by turns powerful and vulnerable starting in the forceful “Bleeding Hart” before receding into the sweet harmony of “Hospital Choir”. In an interview with Sonic Bids, the band called its music “very accessible.” The description is apt, especially on the anthem “Set Fire To Your Friends”, with its catchy hooks and clever lyrics. Overall, Set Fire buzzes with a new, fresh energy and points to greater things in the future.

Catch The Box Tigers at The Fire August 2nd and at MusikFest in Bethlehem August 4th. Get more details here. Check out the video for “Set Fire To Your Friends” below.
