Illinois release new track “Things Are Gonna Be Ok” from upcoming LP
Bucks County outfit Illinois continue to prep for the release of a new record, this week sharing second album cut “Things Are Gonna Be Ok.” The track follows last spring’s industrial “Queen Flea,” cementing the band once again as purveyors of reimagined nineties aesthetics.
The downtempo “Things Are Gonna Be Ok” lilts and builds, opening with an arrangement that sounds like a mellow Nine Inch Nails remix and closing with wall of strings and gang vocals. Throughout the song a sporadic hype beat and what sounds like reverse cymbal hits keep things urgent, matching the nature of the lyrics. Singer Chris Archibald is talking someone down from jumping to their death and paces the song with the same approach you would take in that situation – starting out calm and slow before building to a rousing release when they’ve stepped back.
Illinois join Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Mo Lowda and the Humble at University City’s City Taphouse this Saturday, August 23rd for an outdoor show. More information can be found here. Listen to “Things Are Gonna Be Ok” below.
