West Chester’s Matt Magarahan releases his debut EP Songs to Forget Vol. 1
West Chester-based drummer, producer and songwriter Matt Magarahan has just released his first solo EP, Songs to Forget Vol. 1, a laid-back, folky collection of songs calls that calls out for attention.
Opener “Difficult” is actually the opposite: easy listening at its best. Steady guitar strums pair nicely with Magarahan’s soft crooning, harmonica enters the mix, and the laid-back atmosphere of a summer bonfire is created. Things turn a bit more sorrowful on “Help Wanted,” where a dancing guitar line and soft, steady percussion amps up his sound and Magarahan sings “I hope you don’t ignore my call / sorry for those things I did / things i never said at all.”
The EP draws to its close with “Run To The Sea”, a slow anthem that reveals low, underlying synths, perhaps evoking the soft, lapping waves of the ocean. The track creates a comfortable juxtaposition between the more intense aspects of “Help Wanted”, especially with the entrance of a low, quiet cello near the conclusion.
