Sowing Seeds with the charismatic TV On the Radio at Union Transfer

Brooklyn-based indie icons TV On The Radio played their first Philly show since 2011 in front of a sold-out Union Transfer on Monday night. The band was touring in support of its fifth studio album, Seeds, which was just released on Monday, and most of the audience couldn’t contain their excitement as they heard some of the new songs for the first time ever during the live set, including recent singles “Happy Idiot” and “Careful You.” Throughout the show, they also played a mix of songs off their previous LPs and their debut EP.

Early on in the show, guitarist and vocalist Kyp Malone challenged the audience to put away their iPhones and to just be in the moment for the night. The majority of the crowd appeared to take up Malone’s challenge and continued to love every minute of the show, dancing and jumping around as lead vocalist Tunde Adebimpe led the band with a charismatic delivery. TVOTR’s unique mix of vocals, electronics, and post-punk influences, along with the energy they filled the venue with, made for an awesome live experience.

Portland-based singer and electronic producer Natasha Kmeto opened up the show. Touring in support of her upcoming album Inevitable, due out in early 2015, she performed a set of her multi-layered dance-pop, R&B, and electronic influenced music. Artists such as Kmeto always fascinate me. She produced and wrote all of the music and sounds by herself, and onstage, she was supported by no more than her computer, a keyboard, and her vocals. Despite her minimal equipment, she created a sound so full that most people would assume was produced by at least a few musicians.
