Watch #xpnfest artist Son Little play a Red Bull Stripped Session
Son Little is soulful Philly singer and songwriter Aaron Livingston. He’s performed with RJD2 as Icebird, collaborated with the Roots and recently wrote a couple of songs for and produced the new Mavis Staples EP, Your Good Fortune.
In February, Son Little played a WXPN Free At Noon concert that you can listen to here, and he recently recorded a session for Red Bull. In an interview with Red Bull’s Bella Todd, he was asked “what artists could Son Little not have existed without?” His answer:
It’s an endless list, but Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield are two, for sure. People are sometimes surprised to hear that Black Sabbath are an influence, too. But probably more than anything else, hip-hop like Eric B & Rakim and RunDMC brought so many different styles into play in pop music – it would be hard to conceive of some of the things that I try to do, of feeling free to use any flavour you like, without them.

Son Little performs at this year’s XPoNential Music Festival on Saturday, July 25.
