James McMurtry kept things simple during his set on the final night of NonCOMM. The Texan showcased his new record Complicated Game, released on a label of the same name earlier this year.

He opened with the chuckle-worthy lines of “Honey don’t you be yelling at me when I’m cleaning my gun / I’ll wash the blood off the tailgate when deer season’s done” from “Copper Canteen,” a dry humor showing through in both the wit of his lyrics and the subtlety of his banter. The only non-Game song McMurtry performed was set closer “Down Across the Delaware,” a geographically appropriate track from 1995’s Where’d You Hide the Body.
