I Think Like Midnight present an evening of instrumental rock next month
I Think Like Midnight was a project born out of necessity. That is, the necessity for Philadlephia musician Andrew Chalfen to hear another record by Pell Mell, a band that hasn’t released new material since 1997. Instead of waiting for that Portland instrumental outfit to reunite, Chalfen and his collaborator Dean Sabatino hiked up to Ithaca, NY last year and made their own Pell Mell-inspired record, Warm Seclusion Structure.
The videos released for the record are perfect examples of the band’s range and dynamics. “Ground Effect Aircraft,” with its driving percussion and chugging guitar chords is motivational at the least, inspiring at the most. Meanwhile, “Echo Celeste,” paired with footage of “the pastoral wow that was this past Autumn,” is drifting and sentimental, the occasional string-bending and xylophone melody throwing off the sense that your feet are firmly on the ground.
I Think Like Midnight will perform at Johnny Brenda’s on June 11th. They’ve curated a great night of instrumental rock, opened by Ohio’s Lanterna (who will be recording a session for XPN’s Echoes program earlier that day) and electronic power duo Zach Danzinger and Owen Biddle’s Edit Bunker. Tickets and information for the 21+ show can be found here.
