Local folk act Hezekiah Jones is gearing up to release a new album titled In Loving Memory of oosi Lockjaw, which will be out sometime in November. In the meantime, they stopped by Root Down In The Shadow to play a couple of songs to kick off Season 3 of their Cover Club series.

The group performed a track off the upcoming record, “Spare The Wicked.” It is a slow, warm tune that will delight anyone who enjoys a bit of fiddle with their music.

For their cover, they opted for a ballad-esque version of Johnny Miles’ “Sailors”, complete with lap steel guitar. They cite Johnny Miles as their favorite artist and biggest inspiration as a group. Frontman Raph Cutrufello explained:

Johnny Miles is a songwriting hero and I am honored to also call him a friend.  It was hard to pick just one song from such a prolific and talented writer. “Sailors” is off of ‘Sign of the Times’;  one of my all time favorite albums. Johnny Miles’ lyrics melt me.

You can check out both videos below. As season 3 of Cover Club unfolds, look for performances by Pine Barons (they do a sick mewithoutYou cover), Anthony D’Amato, a collaborative Key Session / Cover Club with Lou, and more.
