Listen to “Sleeper Hold” from Saintseneca’s new album Such Things
Just a few days after announcing a show at Johnny Brenda’s, Ohio’s Saintseneca have announced their new album, entitled Such Things. It’s due out October 9 via ANTI-.
The album’s first single, “Sleeper Hold”, features slurry guitar and the beautiful harmonies of Maryn Jones and frontman Zac Little. It’s a rocking, autumnal folk song with an anthemic chorus, the perfect premiere for Saintseneca’s most accessible output to date.
Such Things is the anticipated follow up to Saintseneca’s acclaimed album Dark Arc. Stereogum said of the album,
Dark Arc shines in all the ways Saintseneca always has — gorgeous harmonies, rampant strumming, glimpses of both humanity’s fragility and power — but it also finds the band branching out into fuller arrangements and wilder instrumentation. (Wilder, even, than the plastic trash can they used to beat on.) It’s what an underground folk band stepping into the spotlight should sound like.
On Such Things, Zac Little wanted to move away from the unusual structures of Dark Arc to create pop-centered songs that showed off his band members’ individual capabilities. “I was pushing myself with Such Things to try to explore the pop motif further, to try to use and bend that formula of having a groove, a beat, locking in and using that as scaffolding to build a song,”, he says. He even feels that it’s the best material Saintseneca has written yet, a step forward on the band’s already distinguished timeline.
