Where in the world(s) is Angel Deradoorian?
Deradoorian, an LA alien who hocketed her way to Pazz & Jop stardom on Dirty Projectors’ seminal Bitte Orca and later played foil to Animal Collective’s Avey Tare in his Monster Mash-inspired Slasher Flicks, returns with transmissions from her home Expanding Flower Planet – one we might assume also contains flowing water.
Deradoorian’s auspicious debut is as vocal-centric as you might expect from a former DPs co-conspirator, with clear traces of her alma mater’s Balkan-tinted Meredith Monk-isms. In lieu of DPs’ “Eww, Girl, Eww”-caliber melisma, Deradoorian inhabits a more new age, “fourth world” aesthetic born more of the SF Tape Music Center and Alice Coltrane (she guests on nephew Flying Lotus’ You’re Dead!!).
There’s certainly potential for the Expanding Flower Planet to sustain life; how fortunate we are that Deradoorian is building the bridge between our world and hers.
Deradoorian opens for Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier at Johnny Brenda’s on Saturday, October 3rd. Details here.
