While one music venue closes another one opens up. This time it’s South, the new jazz club, restaurant and bar opened by Robert and Benjamin Bynum, at Broad and Mt. Vernon Streets.

Located just a couple blocks from the Divine Lorraine hotel, South continues on the legacy that the Bynum Brothers have build with Warmdaddy’s, Zanzibar Blue, and Paris Bistro. The menu at South reflects some of the traditional cooking of the American South (we’d hope so, with a name like that!), and the venue has announced its initial lineup up jazz shows.

First order of musical business is a Wednesday night series with jazz pianist Orrin Evans. “What’s Happening Wednesday” is a series that will present national artists in Philadelphia in a series presented by Evans. On Thursday nights, bassist and band leader Gerald Veasley presents contemporary jazz artists in an “Unscripted Jazz Series” with special guests including saxophonist Kirk Whalum, James Lloyd (Pieces of a Dream), violinist Karen Briggs, and others. Go here for a complete calendar of shows at South.

In a city with such a vibrant jazz scene as Philly, it’s great to have another venue in town for artists to showcase their talent, and for jazz fans to gather.

Below, check out some of the sounds of Orrin Evans and Gerald Veasley.
