Free at Noon Flashback: Yonder Mountain String Band pick and pluck their way through a lively set
The five members of Yonder Mountain String Band are veterans of the live performance game and that was immediately evident on Friday afternoon at World Cafe Live. The band ran through an awesome set of songs both new and old, keeping things lively and spirited during their nearly hour-long set.
Yonder Mountain String Band immediately distinguished themselves as unique with a stage set up that thrust all five members into the foreground, showing how the band operates as a whole with no member more essential than the other. Keeping with this ideal, the band spread the vocal duties throughout the group with almost every member getting a turn at the lead. In true jam band fashion, they also divided solo opportunities between their plethora of talented instrumentalists. This portion was highlighted most prominently by Jacob Jolliff and Allie Kral on the mandolin and violin respectively, whose solos elicited cheers and many a happy listener.
The group kept things going after the broadcast with a couple audience-requested jams which had the fans at World Cafe Live dancing along. If you missed the awesome Free at Noon you can catch the band tonight at the TLA at 8 p.m. with fellow bluegrass aficionados, Henhouse Prowlers. Tickets and more information can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
