Eight is more than just a number. It’s also the name of an exciting new Philly three-piece rock outfit fronted by Year of Glad’s Mimi Gallagher and Amanda X’s Cat Park.

It’s unclear why the group has chosen this name – there aren’t eight members in the band, and the number never even comes up during the four songs on their energetic self-titled debut EP, released on November 18th.

Mysteries aside, one thing is clear – Eight is twelve minutes of pure rock awesomeness. The tracks are driven by crushing angsty guitars and Gallagher’s unconventional vocals, which have hints of the quirky folk singer Julia Stone to them. The music is frustrated but melodic, imposing but fleeting. You can stream the album below and pick up a free download over at the group’s Bandcamp.

Eight is performing tonight at First Unitarian Church alongside All Dogs and headliner Frankie Cosmos. Tickets to the show can be found over at the XPN Concert Calendar.
