Bring the Heat: Listen to what Dead Wrong Records has been up to lately
Last time we checked in with Philly rapper King Shampz, he’d just rolled out his new single “Beware of the Wrong” and was getting ready to kick Dead Wrong Records into high gear. That’s the project he’s helming with his brother and producer Azzan, and over the past month and change, they’ve released a tight handful of jams to Soundcloud. Let’s review.
New York MC Caution flows over a piano-tinged, Keith Jarrett-esque sample and a haunting beat in “Dead Wrong,” a sort of mission statement for the label. The hook is undeniable.
Shampz takes the lead and Frio guests on this track with an old-school, Gamble & Huff-esque soul sound. The timelessness of its sound matches its message of embracing the uncertain and having faith.
Frio pairs up with West Philly’s Blak on this one, and the icy beat and infectious hook will be stuck in your head for a while after listening. Sing it with me now, “That’s that shit right there…”
Blak is back and reflects on that old “Good things come to those who wait” saying over a sentimental and actually kind of beautiful beat. It’s fitting for a song about staying true to yourself and overcoming adversity.
The vocal mic is passed back to King Shampz on the latest cut, “Murder Art,” as he drops clever rhymes and metaphors where paintings and galleries illustrate ever rapper’s aspiration: killing the game.
