Of course, 90s greats The Smashing Pumpkins are known for that epic wall of guitar rock and cranked-to-11 megahits like “Today,” “Cherub Rock” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” But there’s also a more nuanced side to Billy Corgan’s long-running project – the one that centered Siamese Dream with the drifting-to-blistering “Soma,” the one that wrote aching acoustic ballads like “Soothe” from Pisces Iscariot, the one that released the still-underrated Adore.

For those fans – and yo, right here, that’s me – there’s the band’s just-announced In Plainsong spring tour, a series of “electro-acoustic” performances in intimate settings, expanded from a short run of select dates the band undertook last year. The tour makes a stop at The Tower Theater on Friday, April 8th. Tickets are on sale this Friday, February 5th, at 9 a.m., and more information can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.

The Pumpkins lineup on this run is Corgan, longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Fellow Chicagoan Liz Phair will open the run of dates. Below, visit some moments from the quieter side of the Smashing Pumpkins catalog, and check out the full run of tour dates.
