World Cafe Live was packed in wall-to-wall for this week’s Free at Noon concert featuring Ray LaMontagne. Philly is just a stop along the way for LaMontagne before he kicks off his Ourobros Tour. He has teamed up with the members of My Morning Jacket for this tour, minus Jim James who helped produce LaMontagne’s newly released album, Ourobros.

The set list was complete with new songs off of the album, serving as a first look for the audience. As the crowd was requested to put away all cameras and cell phones, all eyes were on stage as fans slipped into a trance while the band debuted “Homecoming” as the first song of the afternoon. Going deeper into album, LaMontagne’s usual mellow and raspy voice pairs well with the rock stylings of MMJ.

The songs have a psychedelic rock kick, channeling a Pink Floyd vibe complete with spacey keyboard effects and heavy guitar parts from both LaMontagne and Carl Broemel. While the album branches out to explore a different sound than what fans could typically expect out of LaMontagne, he manages to still keep his typical style of love and life-inspired lyrics and soulful, blues folk vocals.

LaMontagne will be visiting Philadelphia again in June at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. More information can be found at WXPN’s Concert Calendar. Ourobros is available now for download. Check out photos from today’s concert in the gallery below.
