Free at Noon Flashback: Boogarins bring psychedelic rock to World Cafe Live
Brazilian rock outfit Boogarins kicked off the Friday afternoon by bringing their psychedelic rock sound into World Cafe Live for this week’s Free at Noon concert. The band made an appearance in Philadelphia not too long ago during their tour with Andrew Bird, and they decided to make one more stop before heading up to Brooklyn. Their tour is in support of their second and most recent album Manual, which was released back in October 2015.
While the band sings in Portuguese, that did not stop the crowd from getting into the rhythm of the music. Their psychedelic tones are backed by heavy drums and an occasional guitar solo that lends off more of a rock sound. The songs are spontaneous and funky, many not seeming to have a specific beginning, middle and end. The vocals are strong, but will often have an airy and spacey feel, comparable to Tame Impala.
The four-piece band was started by childhood friends Dinho Almeida and Benke Ferraz. After putting out their first EP while still in high school back in 2013, this is the first album the band has released together. The album has received of feedback as having been politically driven, such as in their song “Avalanche.”
