Listen tonight at 6:07 to a tribute to Prince: It’s been 7 hours and 13 days
Tonight, XPN’s Dan Reed will join other public radio stations around the country in a tribute to Prince, who passed away on April 21st. Dan will play Prince’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” as will DJs from other public stations including KEXP in Seattle, WFUV in New York, KKXT in Dallas, KUTX in Austin, Radio Milwaukee, and The Current in Minneapolis. The song will be played at 6:07 p.m. ET, which marks the lyric from Prince’s version of the song, “It’s been 7 hours and 13 days.”
The Prince written song, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” was recorded by Sinead O’Connor, who had a hit with it in 1990. It was on her album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, and the song spent four weeks in a row at number one on the Billboard charts in April and May of 1990. In her version of the song, Sinead sings “It’s been 7 hours and 15 days,” yet when Prince recorded a live version of it he sings “It’s been 7 hours and 13 days.” His version appears on as a live duet with Rosie Gaines, on his 1993 compilations The Hits/The B-Sides and The Hits 1.
Former XPN afternoon host Jim McGuinn, now at The Current, came up with the idea to celebrate Prince’s legacy. McGuinn says “We just wanted to honor the man we called our friend, and the music we all love, and thought that maybe we might be able to get radio stations all over the world to share this moment with fans who are missing this great artist.”
