WXPN to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 75 birthday with all-day airplay and a special Free At Noon with Mason Porter
Bob Dylan turns 75 this year. To celebrate, WXPN will be playing nothing but Dylan on Tuesday, May 24th (his actual birthday) and will be holding a special Free At Noon at World Cafe Live with Philly bluegrass/Americana band Mason Porter & Friends, where they will be covering and honoring the folk legend.
Since the early 60’s, Dylan has released numerous landmark albums and gone through many different “musical phases,” catching people off-guard by going electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 and penning several rock classics such as “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” His music is timeless: the voice not only of a generation, but of both folk music and roll and roll itself.
Mason Porter has been operating since 2006 and got their start in West Chester, PA. The band has since released several albums, including 2015’s Key To the Skyway EP, and a collection of folk covers, Story Of The Rifle, which includes a cover of the Dylan classic, “Girl From North Country.”
The band just announced a new EP, Heart of The Mountains, out in June. The title track was inspired by the writings of John Muir, American naturalist and early advocate of US wilderness preservation. The band is releasing the EP in conjunction with the National Park Service’s Centennial celebration and will be collaborating with the NPS on several events this year.
Bob Dylan himself will be returning to Philly to play at the Mann Center on July 13th to promote his new album of Frank Sinatra covers, Fallen Angels. The show will be double-billed with blues/gospel legend Mavis Staples. For tickets and more information, check out the XPN Concert Calendar.
Make sure to tune into XPN on Tuesday, May 24th to hear a day full of Dylan favorites and pick up tickets to XPN’s Free At Noon with Mason Porter at the XPN Website. Watch Mason Porter cover Dylan’s “Girl From North Country” at World Cafe Live below.
